Beckett Street, Stipendiary Street
This image shows number 128 a Spiritual Church on Beckett Street on the far left. Large advertisements in the centre promote McDougall's flour, Automatic tuning tv's from Naughten and Bird, number 284/6 Harehills Lane, Luxury loaf, the pub and eggs. On the right cars are parked in Stipendiary Street with numbers 2 to 6 visible behind the adverts.
York Road, Shaftesbury Hotel
June 2008. View of the Shaftesbury Hotel at the junction of York Road and Harehills Lane, taken shortly before its demolition. Roof tiles have already been removed, and a 'For Sale' sign still hangs outside. Built on the site of the former St. Alban's vicarage, it had been a pub for over 70 years.
Roundhay Road, Fforde Grene
12th April 1939. Fforde Grene was opened in November 1938 by the Melborne brewery. The name was taken from the Ford family estate in Staffordshire; the old hall was called Fforde Grene. Managing Director of the Melborne brewery was Edward V. Ford. Situated at the junction of Harehills Lane and Roundhay Road. The pub was closed in July 2004 following a police raid.
New York Street, tram number 87, route 17
Undated This image was taken on New York Street. The number 87 tramcar is just crossing the junction with St Peter's Street and Duke Street and about to enter York Street. Route 17 was a 'short-working' on York Road and terminated at the Shaftesbury pub. Destination blinds would show 'Harehills Lane'. However, this car is on an even shorter working and will run off service when it reaches Torre Road depot. Information supplied by Dave Johnson.
